Overview

Kimi is the AI assistant from Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based company (the site carries Beijing ICP registration numbers). Its current model is K3, and Moonshot pitches it for agentic coding and knowledge work rather than casual chat. The free web app is at kimi.com, with desktop and mobile apps as well.
The interface is built around handing tasks to an agent. Beyond normal chat there are dedicated modes for Slides, Docs, Sheets, Design and Deep Research, plus a Build mode that can publish websites, including ones backed by a database. You can also set up scheduled tasks that run on their own and push results back to you, organise work into projects, and add plugins, some of which connect to professional financial and economic databases. Paid plans add Kimi Code for programming, a Swarm mode that splits work across several sub-agents, and Kimi Claw, which runs on web, Android and PC.
Membership pricing
From Kimi's membership page, checked October 2026 (monthly price first, then the annual equivalent):
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adagio (free) | $0 | $0 | Free tier |
| Plus | $19 | $15/mo ($180/yr) | More agent credits, Deep Research, website deployment, Kimi Code |
| Pro | $39 | $31/mo ($372/yr) | 2× agent credits, Goal mode |
| Max | $99 | $79/mo ($948/yr) | 5× credits, up to 1M tokens of chat context |
| Ultra | $199 | $159/mo ($1,908/yr) | 10× credits |
Higher tiers also raise limits on concurrent agent tasks, scheduled tasks (10 to 25), projects (up to 100) and project storage (500 MB up to 50 GB). There are separate Business and API plans.
Is it for you?
Kimi suits people who want an agent to produce finished files, like a slide deck, a spreadsheet model or a small website, rather than just text in a chat window. The long-context option on Max is useful for very long documents or codebases.
Good: a usable free tier; agent modes for office files and websites; annual billing saves a meaningful amount.
Less good: "agent credits" are described as multiples, so it's hard to know how far a plan goes; the jump from Pro to Max is large; and businesses with data-location rules should read Moonshot's privacy terms before uploading sensitive files.
Alternatives
DeepSeek is the other big Chinese model, with very cheap API prices. For agent-style task execution, look at Manus and Genspark; Claude is a strong Western choice for coding and long documents.
