Overview

What it is

Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic, available on the web, desktop, iOS and Android. It is widely used for writing, analysis of long documents, research and programming. Paid plans also include Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, which shares the same subscription and usage pool as the chat app.

Key features

Based on Anthropic's official pricing and plan comparison (October 2026):

  • Chat on all platforms with web search, voice mode and memory across conversations, including on the Free plan.
  • Artifacts: Claude can create documents, code, diagrams and small interactive apps in a side panel you can edit and share.
  • File creation and code execution: Claude can create and edit files such as spreadsheets and documents by running code, on all plans.
  • Projects: group chats, files and instructions; up to five on Free, unlimited on paid plans.
  • Research: deeper, multi-step research on paid plans.
  • Connectors and skills: connect Claude to apps and tools you use, and add reusable skills.
  • Claude Code: a coding agent for the terminal and IDEs, included on all paid plans.
  • Office integrations: Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook on paid plans; Claude Design, Slides and Docs are also listed on paid plans.
  • Large context: Anthropic lists context windows of up to 1 million tokens, varying by model.
  • Privacy options: incognito chats on all plans; model training is opt-out on Free, Pro and Max and "none by default" on Team and Enterprise.

Pricing (verified October 2026)

  • Free: $0.
  • Pro: $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month with annual billing ($200 billed up front). Anthropic says Pro gives at least five times more usage per five-hour session than Free.
  • Max: from $100/month, with a choice of 5x or 20x the usage of Pro, higher output limits and priority access. Max is billed monthly. Check the official site for the current price of the 20x option.
  • Team: for 2 to 150 people, with SSO, central billing and admin controls; check the official site for current seat pricing.
  • Enterprise: Anthropic's FAQ states $20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates, billed annually.

All plans have usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans. Anthropic notes there is no fixed message count; usage depends on conversation length, model and features. Paid users can turn on usage credits to continue at API rates after hitting a limit.

Who it's for

  • Writers, editors and researchers working with long documents.
  • Professionals who want an assistant inside Microsoft 365 and Chrome.
  • Developers who want a chat assistant and Claude Code in one subscription.
  • Teams that need SSO and no training on their data by default.

Pros

  • Capable free tier including web search, memory, Artifacts and file creation.
  • Claude Code included with every paid plan.
  • Clear plan comparison and transparent explanation of how limits work.
  • Strong privacy defaults on business plans, plus incognito chats for everyone.
  • Annual discount on Pro.

Cons

  • No fixed message counts; heavy users can hit rolling or weekly limits.
  • Chat and Claude Code draw from the same pool, so heavy coding reduces chat capacity.
  • Max is significantly more expensive and monthly-only.
  • Image generation is not a core feature, unlike some competitors.
  • As with all AI models, outputs must be checked for accuracy.

Alternatives on AIMAPER

  • ChatGPT: broader built-in features including image generation.
  • Google Gemini: tight Google Workspace integration and bundled storage.
  • Cursor or GitHub Copilot: if coding is your main use.
  • Perplexity: for cited web research.

Bottom line

Claude is a strong choice for writing, document analysis and coding, with a generous free tier and a Pro plan that bundles Claude Code at no extra cost. If you mainly need images, look elsewhere; if you value long-context work, clear privacy options and an integrated coding agent, Claude Pro is good value. Upgrade to Max only if rolling limits regularly interrupt your work.
