Overview
Colourlab is a set of AI imaging tools for people who work with moving images. Its flagship product, Colourlab Ai 4, is professional colour grading software that automates balancing and shot matching, lets you choose a reference look and then refine it by hand. The company says it was built for professional colourists but is now accessible to anyone working with video.
AI matching
AI Matching connects separate shots into one visual language, so footage from different cameras, lighting or locations looks like part of the same story. You can shape luminance, colour and saturation, and the site stresses that the final decision stays in your hands rather than with the software.
Film appearance and colour management
For film looks, you can choose an existing film emulation or create your own. Astra Film can be started free, Look Designer lets you author profiles, and Filmlab Ai covers specialist finishing. Cine IS is a colour management foundation that connects source interpretation, working spaces and display output, with room for film appearance and spatial processing.
Conversational grading
Colourlab also offers conversational grading through Claude and MCP. In a supported DaVinci Resolve Studio workflow, you can ask Claude to fetch your timeline, balance the clips and push the result back to Resolve, while Colourlab's on-device tools analyse and process the images. The site notes that you review the result and that pushing overwrites grades on the affected clips.
Workflow
The software works with DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer. Since 2018, its developer, Color Intelligence, has built proprietary neural networks and image-processing technology, and its AI Color Engine powers on-device colour grading in HONOR smartphones.
Pricing
Colourlab Ai 4 offers a 14-day trial, runs on Apple silicon Macs and is listed from $49 per month. Astra can be started free.
Who it suits
It suits colourists, editors, cinematographers and small post-production teams who want faster balancing and matching without giving up manual control.
Things to consider
Check that your Mac is Apple silicon before planning a workflow around it. Because pushed grades overwrite existing ones on affected clips, work on a duplicate timeline when testing the conversational workflow. Use the trial on real project footage to judge how well matching handles your camera mix.
