Overview

NavamAI is an open-source command-line tool that turns your terminal into a personal AI assistant. Its site describes it as fast, configurable and unobtrusive, giving access to 15 large language models from 7 providers through a few simple commands. It is installed from GitHub and is free to use, though you supply your own model provider keys or local models.
Markdown-first workflows
NavamAI is built around Markdown, the plain-text format with simple formatting marks. Because it reads and writes Markdown files, it fits into tools many writers and developers already use, such as Obsidian, VS Code and static site generators like Material for MkDocs and Jekyll for GitHub Pages. You can use it to draft, expand, refine or summarise notes and documents without leaving your editor or terminal.
Situational apps
One feature is generating small web apps on request. You run the ask command and choose the app creation prompt template, and NavamAI writes a Markdown document containing code blocks for each file in the project, plus install and run scripts. It can then run the app on your laptop within seconds. The idea is quick, throwaway tools for a specific situation rather than production software.
Other features
The documentation covers prompt templates, comparing answers from different models, working with local models, and evaluating model output. Because the configuration is a plain file, you can choose which models handle which jobs and adjust settings as you go. A podcast and a Substack journal follow the project's development.
Who it is for
It suits developers, technical writers and knowledge workers who are comfortable in a terminal and want one consistent interface across several AI providers instead of switching between web chats. People who keep notes in Markdown will get the most from it.
Things to consider
It is a command-line tool, so non-technical users may find setup harder than a web app. API usage with commercial providers is billed by those providers, so watch your spending. Generated apps should be reviewed before you rely on them or share them, since AI-written code can contain bugs or security problems. As an open-source project, check how actively it is maintained before you build a workflow around it.
